Here’s a little background information on this year’s tournament…
Russia was selected to host the 2018 World Cup on 2 December 2010, following the infamous FIFA bidding process. We won’t cover the full story of the bidding here, as it was well documented at the time, and it’s in the past now, time to move on. The tournament will run from 14 June to 15 July 2018. There are 12 stadiums, spread across 11 cities, which will host games, all within the European side of Russia, to keep travel manageable for fans and team. The tournament is the first to be held in Europe since Germany 2006, and the first to be held in Eastern Europe. Aside from the bidding controversy, the tournament has been subject to speculation and criticism in regards to racism and hooliganism. We’re aware that there are a number of fans, particularly from Western Europe, who are concerned about safety surrounding the games. In case you missed it, Mark, one of our Editors-in-Chief, wrote an article on the subject, based on his experiences of living in Russia and attending football matches. It’s well worth a read for any fans that might travelling, or those who are seeking an insight of football in Russia. Here’s the link.
